Armenia Election Monitor 2008 brings the first photos of the election day - “Finally the day has arrived”, writes Onnik Krikoryan with relief, “Whatever the outcome one thing is certain. In this round or a possible second, Armenia will elect a new president in a vote that international observers hope will represent a marked improvement over the last presidential election in 2003.”

I wish I could be as optimistic as you, Onnik.

Is it true that members of the armed forces were suggested - perhaps to the point of force - to vote for Serge?

  2. Onnik Krikorian Says:

Well, I know one person who is married to an officer and they were initially requested to sign a form saying they would vote for Serge. However, they were then told actually, you can vote for who you like.

However, military voting for conscripts was undoubtedly a problem and always is. So, what’s the solution? Well, both the government and opposition are undemocratic forces.

Sorry to say that there will be slow progress as it will take generations to change present mentalities.

Ter-Petrossian, for example, is now protesting not because he actually won the election, but because this was his chosen method of returning to power from the very beginning. There should have been a second round, though.

If he uses the courts I’ll be impressed and optimistic for this country. If he doesn’t and just rallies people until they get tired and go home, I won’t be.
